How to visit Coille a’ Thorra Ghairbh | Torgarve Woods
Coille a’ Thorra Ghairbh is accessible only by foot, bicycle or wheeling approximately 0.7 km on a roughly-surfaced track.
By car: please park in the main free car park in Applecross where there are also community owned public toilets.
From outside Applecross Campsite, follow the track in the opposite direction from the road towards a wooden gate. Go through the gate, past the Hebridean barns and through the next gate, making sure to close them behind you. Continue along the track through Càrnach hazelwoods. When you reach the metal gate and drystone wall, you have reached Coille a’ Thorra Ghairbh.
Footpaths and the Archaeological Trail
Coille a’ Thorra Ghairbh features a circular walking trail around the site which is marked by trail marker posts. The footpath is rough underfoot and is approximately 1 km.
This footpath is part of a longer Archaeological Trail. A guide to the this trail can be bought from Applecross Stores or Applecross Heritage Centre. The main track goes through the middle of Coille a’ Thorra Ghairbh. It then passes Torgarve Cottage, a private residence, and continues downhill to Miltown Loch. Please note that the area beyond is common grazing and dogs should be kept on a lead.
Shelter
Halfway along the main track through Coille a’ Thorra Ghairbh is a community-built timber-frame shelter which is currently under construction. The porch has been designed to offer a covered area for visitors to enjoy.
