Applecross Community Woodland aims to restore Coille a’ Thorra Ghairbh as a thriving native woodland and to increase biodiversity through habitat enhancement including native woodland, wetland, and a wildflower meadow to benefit and attract native flora, fauna, and fungi.
In 2021, Torgarve was clear-felled of eight hectares of mature Sitka spruce. We established a community tree nursery growing 3000 sessile oak and hazel trees from local provenance seed, which will be used for our future woodland restock activities.
Once the Sitka spruce was removed, ground flora including primroses, bluebells and native broadleaves such as ash, rowan and hawthorn have begun to reappear and are self-seeding across the site. We intend to work with the processes of natural regeneration and to carry out enrichment planting with species including sessile oak, hazel, scots pine, juniper, alder and aspen.
