“Essential facility for Applecross residents and visitors”
Background
Applecross Community Company (ACC) took over ownership of the toilets from the Council in 2012 in order to ensure this essential facility was retained and could be upgraded. Grants from Highland LEADER, Highland Council, HIE and the Applecross Games Committee allowed the building to be refurbished, with the addition of a solar panel allowing access to hot water for the first time.
ACC is dependent on Comfort Scheme Funding from the Highland Council and donations from visitors to keep the toilets open every day of the year. Sadly, increasing numbers of visitors have not resulted in a significant increase in income from donations, while running costs have increased considerably, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In February 2021, we installed touch-free sensor toilet flushes, taps, soap and lights to ensure that all waste is disposed of quickly and that hands can be washed without touching the faucet surface, so fewer germs are transferred around the facility. This was possible thanks to funding from the Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
In May 2021, we installed a paid entry system at the toilets with coin and contactless card payment available. The income from the paid entry system will go towards covering the regular maintenance and wages for our lovely hardworking cleaners. In 2020 we increased the frequency of cleaning at the toilets due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We can consider a different arrangement for those who live in Applecross and use the toilets regularly, e.g. no payment required for residents – please get in touch.
